Welcome to Alfred Buxton’s Gardens, a directory of Buxton gardens originally compiled during research for my book The Fairer Side of Buxton: Alfred Buxton’s gardens and the women who loved them, and added to since the book was published and I’ve become aware of more gardens Buxton designed.

The information listed has been gathered from garden plans, Buxton company publications, advertisements, local histories and information from past and present Buxton garden owners. It includes:

  • Details for the property’s name, who commissioned it and date if known
  • If a property had a name at the time the garden was commissioned it is listed under that name with subsequent names (if known) listed after that
  • If a property was unnamed it is listed under the person who commissioned it
  • If the garden is discussed in either The Fairer Side of Buxton: Alfred Buxton’s gardens and the women who loved them or Rupert Tipple’s Colonial Landscape Gardener: Alfred Buxton of Christchurch, New Zealand, 1872-1950 this is indicated at the end of the garden’s listing.

The directory is a living record, able to be expanded and amended.  If you have information to add, whether it be a garden or detail for a listed garden, please do let me know.
